Not that we’re complaining, of course, after dropping the news that the creepy-looking mystery mutant in the final “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” trailer was indeed him (i.e., Deadpool), Reynolds went on to discuss the importance of the character, his origin story in the film, and his desire to play the role of the “Merc with a Mouth” for years now.
“To be able to [play the part of Deadpool] in ’Wolverine’ is incredible, you know, and it really does trace the origins of the character Deadpool,” said Reynolds. “You really see his birth, his evolution from Wade Wilson to Deadpool, and really he is more or less the creature that becomes Deadpool later on, but we see his humble beginnings.”
Most likely, one of the reasons why Reynolds seems to be so excited to talk about the role stems from the fact that it’s been a character he’s wanted to play since the 1990s.
“I’ve been trying to play [Deadpool] since the ’90s,” said Reynolds. “So to get a chance and get out there and do it in any form — whether if it’s in a ’Wolverine’ movie or if it’s in a standalone Deadpool movie — was exciting to me.”
“The first time I read a ’Deadpool’ [comic] I thought, ’Oh, this would be kind of cool,’ and then that took off a little bit more in 2004, 2005,” added Reynolds. “It was actually an option that these be made into a movie at some point, so that’s where I started to pursue it a little bit more.”
