'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' Movie Trailer Has A New Mutant -- But Who Is He? Deadpool? Weapon XI?

The latest -- and, we're told, final -- trailer for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is now online, and the footage that has the online world buzzing right now is our first in-action shot of a brand new mutant squaring off against Logan (Hugh Jackman).

After images of a toy based on the new character had everyone thinking he could be a scarred-up Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), the new trailer (and recently posted casting info) seems to offer a different take on the character's identity.

Sporting a pair of claws similar to Wolverine, but with a sealed-up mouth and, late in the preview, an optical blast a la Scott "Cyclops" Summers (who also appears in the clip), the new mutant's live-action debut is generating a lot of questions.

Late last year, there was no shortage of hype for Reynolds' debut as Wade Wilson, Marvel's "Merc with the Mouth" Deadpool, courtesy of everyone from Fox Chairman Tom Rothman to former Fox exec Jeff Katz, who told MTV News that Reynolds was "the only guy who can play that character. He is that character."

However, many comics fans questioned whether Reynolds' good looks meant that the studio planned to abandon one of the character's other notable attributes (besides his running commentary, of course), and not subject him to the horrible scarring that prompted him to don a full-body costume and mask. As comics fans know, Deadpool's scarring was the result of early experimentation with Wolverine's healing factor that left him well beyond help from skin creme.

Early shots of Reynolds in action as Deadpool only added to fans' fears that the movie character would diverge from his print counterpart in this aspect.

However, images of one of the action figures in the upcoming line of "Wolverine" movie toys opened the Deadpool discussion once again, as a strange-looking figure appeared on shelves labeled as "Deadpool" on its packaging. Naturally, this ignited speculation that the bizarre figure with blades on its hands and no obvious mouth was actually the scarred-up version of Reynolds' character.

Now, with the debut of the new "Wolverine" trailer, we have at least one answer -- and a few more questions. (But isn't that always the way it works?)

A good, up-close look at the character reveales that it certainly isn't Reynolds with the sealed-up mouth and blades. Also, recent additions to the "Wolverine" movie cast listing on IMDb indicate that the mysterious new mutant is played by Scott Adkins, and goes by the name of "Weapon XI."

So, it looks like the Deadpool action figure was indeed a red herring, folks -- and this won't be the look sported by the Marvel Merc.

However, there are a few more burning questions left unanswered. While we saw quite a bit more of Reynolds in action as Deadpool -- we still don't know if he'll ever don the familiar red-and-black mask of his comics counterpart. As for Weapon XI, what role will he play in the film? (And what's up with his mouth?)
