After releasing the country version of her hit “Born This Way” last month, it appears as if Lady Gaga’s now gone Bollywood. She’s teamed up with famous Indian producers Salim and Sulaiman for a Desi-fied remix of “BTW,” which debuted earlier this week. After listening to the re-worked tune, we couldn’t help but create a playlist of other noteworthy Bollywood-influenced tracks/remixes.
» Pussycat Dolls – “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny):” Originally used in the critically-acclaimed film “Slumdog Millionaire,” Nicole Scherzinger (and, to a lesser extent, her Pussycat Dolls) teamed with producer Ron Fair on a revamped version of the song. In an interview with MTV News, Scherzinger admitted she original didn’t want to cover the Oscar-winning song saying,” I was really scared and I kind of didn’t want to do it. I heard the song and fell in love with it … and I was scared to death to touch it. I was afraid for people to hear it before I even wrote it.”
» Britney Spears – “Me Against The Music (Rishi Rich’s Desi Kulcha Remix):” Back in 2003, before she shaved her head and went insane, Britney Spears released In The Zone, her most experimental album to date. And, somewhat accordingly, she decided to round out Zone’s tracklist with an Indian remix to the LP’s lead single “Me Against The Music,” featuring none other than Madonna. While the pop star performed the mix on her Onyx Hotel Tour outing the following year, she stepped things up a notch when she performed an alternate Bollywood remix (complete with Indian costumery) during her 2008 Circus Tour.
» Truth Hurts – “Addictive:” Truth Hurt’s solo career may not have prospered as well as she had hoped, but the R&B singer enjoyed her share of success with her 2002 debut single “Addictive.” The tune, which was primarily based around an unauthorized Bollywood sample of a 1981 song by singer Lata Mangeshkar, reached #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when an Indian film and music company sued her record label for more than $500 million over the use of the unlicensed sample.
» Jay Sean – “Ride It (Desi Remix):” Before his teaming up with Lil Wayne in America, Jay Sean was enjoying overseas success thanks mostly to a string of singles on his sophomore effort My Own Way. Among the hits included a tune called “Ride It,” which was eventually given the Bollywood makeover. Never one to miss a marketing ploy, Sean later added a new twist to the track when he recorded a Hindi version of the song for the Indian release of the LP.
