"Bullying is being a bully to someone who's defenseless, a poor little person who's done nothing wrong, not the people who are a--holes. When you act irresponsibly and run around the world like Lindsay Lohan, you're gonna get made fun of by me."
-Comedian and late night talk show host Chelsea Handler, defending her approach to comedy during a conversation with friend and colleague Kathy Griffin in Handler's E! talk show "Chelsea Lately" on Thursday night (December 9).
Handler has had to be on the defensive as of late because of a handful of comments she made about actress Angelina Jolie during a stand-up appearance over the weekend. The host is friends with actress Jennifer Aniston, who was married to Brad Pitt before Pitt left her for Jolie. During the stand-up appearance, Handler called Jolie a "f---ing b----" and a "f---ing homewrecker" for "stealing someone's husband."
A video of her tirade ended up on the Internet, it became a talking point that stretched all the way to the daytime talk world. "They were talking about me on 'The View,' talking about me and my Angelina Jolie tirade. Can I just say that I've been making fun of Angelina Jolie since she made out with her brother?" she said on an episode of her show earlier in the week. "If I've learned nothing from this, it's to write new jokes."
Griffin, who has also come under fire for her skewering of celebrities, was also on the defensive about her recent comments about Bristol Palin (she called her fat). "There's a big difference between being a comedian and bullying," Griffin pointed out.
