No matter how great your weekend was, it’s doubtful that it was as good as Lil Wayne’s. The 27-year-old rapper walked out of Rikers Island on Thursday (November 4) and began a whirlwind 72-hour trek that saw him cross the country to take care of legal business in Arizona, visit family in New Orleans, make his first on-stage appearance in eight months during Drake’s concert in Las Vegas and host a killer party in Miami. MTV News was close behind every step of the way, and Sway was able to get the first comments from Weezy (as well as friend, mentor and label boss Bryan “Birdman” Williams) as he was on his way into the huge “Welcome Home Tunechi” party in downtown Miami.
While puffing on a cigar, Wayne told Sway what it felt like to make the transition from being behind bars to being back in the free world. “I forgot about yesterday,” Wayne said. He was also enthusiastic about his performance in Las Vegas. “It’s unexplainable,” he said. “Words can’t explain. I’m good with words, and they can’t explain.”
Weezy also thanked everybody who supported him during his difficult time away. “I just want to thank everybody,” Weezy said. “Not only MTV fans but fans all across the world, and especially my family. I couldn’t have done it without them, and I won’t ever do it without them.”
As for what’s next for the prolific MC, Birdman said the sky is the limit. “He’s the shot caller,” he told Sway. “Whatever he wants to do, it’s green light.”
