When the Insane Clown Posse paid a visit to the MTV Newsroom on Wednesday (September 1), they were running a little bit late. That's typical of most of the stars who come to chat with us, as their schedules are usually overloaded and navigating midtown traffic to get to our Times Square offices can be a little tricky. But ICP were slightly tardy because of an issue unique to them, as they were touching up their makeup before coming over.
Despite the fact that they are extremely close to their fans, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope tend not to go anywhere without first putting their faces on. They wear their makeup everywhere — including in their new movie "Big Money Rustlas," which was just released on DVD. The face paint is an important part of their respective characters, and wearing the makeup allows Juggalos to identify each other more easily. It not only bonds them together as fans, but it also connects them to the band they love.
Since they've been wearing the paint for the entirety of their existence as a group, the pair have become pretty good at getting their faces on in a pinch. "I could do this with my eyes closed," Shaggy 2 Dope told MTV News. "We've been putting this on since '91, so we could do it underwater and blindfolded."
"I'd say it takes us about 10 minutes," Violent J added. "We could do it in a moving car. Sometimes we have to do it pretty quick, so we're pretty skilled at that."
However, he admits that it wasn't always this way. "He used to do both of our makeup for the first five or six years," J said of Shaggy. "Until one day he was like, 'F--- you, man! Do it yourself!' I used to pretend I didn't know how to do it, and I think I did it one day because I had to, and that blew my cover."
