Miley Cyrus Kisses A Girl, Joins The Ranks Of Classic Girl-On-Girl Pop Culture Moments

Miley Cyrus’ latest single “Can’t Be Tamed” (along with its suggestive video) is something of a dramatic departure for the 17-year-old singer and actress. It jettisons the rock-centric tunes of her previous work (both as herself and as her alter-ego Hannah Montana) for the sake of a sexy electronic groove that is more Ke$ha than country. As she (and her audience) get a little older, she has also been pushing the boundaries of her image. She grabbed a few headlines and raised a bunch of eyebrows on Thursday night’s (June 3) episode of “Britain’s Got Talent.” During her performance of “Can’t Be Tamed,” Cyrus channeled Katy Perry (or, more aptly, Adam Lambert) and grabbed one her backup dancers so she could lay a kiss on her.

It was a surprising move for Cyrus, though she is treading across familiar territory. Modern pop culture has long been obsessed with girl-on-girl moments ever since the release of the 1998 potboiler “Wild Things,” which saw Neve Campbell and Denise Richards share multiple scantily-clad and sweaty moments. On the other side of that coin, there were Willow and Tara from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” who actually shared the first gay kiss in television history. The music world has delivered Perry (whose hit “I Kissed a Girl” introduced the world to the pop starlet) and the epic three-way kiss between Britney Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Most recently, we saw “Twilight” star Kirsten Stewart lock lips with co-star Dakota Fanning in the rock biopic “The Runaways.”

The music world also brought us T.A.T.U., a pair of Russian girls who constantly played around with sexuality and scored a big hit with “All the Things She Said” back in 2002.
