When I graduated from NYU back in 2006, the big-name speaker was resident "Sex and the City" Russian (and world-class ballet dancer) Mikhail Baryshnikov. That was awesome and all, but he didn't win my heart like Daniel Desario from "Freaks and Geeks," a.k.a. actor James Franco.
If Franco were coming to my school to make the commencement speech, I would have died. I mean, he is a brainy babe. But the kids over at UCLA didn't feel that way and decided they didn't want James to make their speech, as planned. They didn't think he lived up to the “caliber” of speaker the university deserves. Clearly, they don't know the gift that was being bestowed upon them.
James, who is never one to go where he isn't wanted, has decided not to deliver the speech on June 12. Why? Well, he's busy being an actor! "Unfortunately, the date conflicts with me needing to be on location to begin pre-production on my next film. I wish everyone in the 2009 class the best of luck in all of their future endeavors."
You know what, James? You were clearly not being appreciated. Now that you're taking classes at NYU, if you ever need someone to show you around Bobst Library, give me a shout!
