Dear Justin Timberlake,
It pains me to admit this, but it seems that Kanye West is right. You are just being lazy. The least humble rapper on the planet took a swipe at you last week, saying you could have been music's #1 man, but you "went on vacation" while he was busy making albums.
Well, JT, after watching you on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, I kind of have to agree. Watching your tour de force "Weekend Update" segment, in which you flawlessly blasted through an entire Thanksgiving week "SNL" episode in under three minutes, and your bit with Beyoncé as one of three inept but snaptastic backup dancers (wearing a skintight leotard and high heels, no less), it feels like you're squandering your talent.
I get that the boy-band experience was draining. Sold-out arena tours, a world-tripping romance with Jessica Biel and nearly universal adulation for your solo efforts take a bit out of you. Clearly you're in the driver's seat now, and you can call your own shots. And judging by your self-satisfied grin during the "Update" bit, you know damn well you've got comedy, acting and singing chops. So what gives?
Yeah, you're only 27, with your whole career ahead of you, but it's been two years since your last album (hell, Britney will have put out two albums since then, and we know she's had other things going on in her life). And frankly, it's not like your movie work is taking up all your time. "Edison," "Alpha Dog" and "Southland Tales" were all DOA at the box office, and we won't even mention "The Love Guru." Of course, we had to wait four years between your first two solo albums, but Kanye's got a point about striking while it's hot. And your work on Madonna's album doesn't count.
Sure, less is more. It'll be worth the wait. Anticipation is sexy, blah, blah, blah. All I'm saying is, you've got it, you know it's good, just use it!
Do you think Justin Timberlake's been using his time wisely? Do you hope his "SNL" appearance was a taste of things to come? Tell us!
