The film co-stars “Footloose” actor Miles Teller as perpetual party animal Sutter Keely, a directionless teen whose life takes a turn when he meets socially awkward Aimee (played by Shailene). At turns light-hearted and heart-breaking, “The Spectacular Now” is one you won’t want to miss—especially if you’re a lover of all things YA. Here’s why:
It’s based on a young-adult novel
An obvious reason, yes, but an important one too! The film is adapted from Tim Tharp’s National Book Award finalist, published in 2008. If you’re already up to speed on the enthralling source material, may we suggest cuddling up with one of Tharp’s other novels, like “Knights of the Hill Country,” “Mojo” or “Badd”?
Shailene is our our once and future YA queen
Perhaps even more so than Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence before her, Shailene is poised to rule the world of young-adult adaptations (see “Divergent”). But unlike her predecessors, Shailene’s not simply focusing on teen franchises. To wit, she’ll begin filming the big-screen version of John Green’s heartbreaking novel “The Fault in Our Stars” later this summer. Catch her in “The Spectacular Now”, well, now so you can say you knew her when.
“The Fault in Our Stars” connection
Speaking of “TFiOS,” if you’re curious how Green’s novel will be adapted for the big screen by screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, you’ll want to check out “The Spectacular Now” because they wrote that script too! (And if you’re still not satisfied—you, Curious George, you!—watch the 2009 romance “(500) Days of Summer,” which the duo penned from scratch.)
