Is "The Originals" about to get "Lost"? Not quite, but when we caught up with Joseph Morgan and Daniel Gillies, the stars of The CW's upcoming "Vampire Diaries" spin-off, we were curious as to how flashback heavy their new series would be. After all, its predecessor never met a period scene it didn't like, and with a millennium's worth of history at their disposal, there's no shortage of content to mine.
"We have a thousand years to draw on, so I hope so," Joseph said of his wishes for a flashback-filled narrative. "I even wondered at one point, when we were talking about the format of the show, whether it would follow a 'Lost' format—flashbacks every episode. I think that would be too expensive."
"But awesome," Daniel chimed in. "Can we do that? What an amazing idea. You never shared that with me. I'm sort of hurt that you're doing it in the middle of an interview."
"I have to keep something up my sleeve," Joseph replied with a wry smile. "I think I read it somewhere. It wasn't mine."
Whatever the case, you can bet there will be plenty of historical moments featuring the Original family, and if Joseph has his druthers, they may shiver your timbers.
"I want to do a swashbuckling episode," he said. "Where we are rival pirates and..."
"He's not kidding," Daniel interjected. "He wants it to be a musical. He wants it to be sung, [like] Rodgers & Hammerstein."
"[Warner Bros. Television president] Peter Roth wants to do a musical," Joseph said. "He's a huge musical fan, so be careful what you wish for."
As for Daniel, his flashback wishes verge towards the more...spiritual.
"I think Klaus and Elijah should pay a little visit to Judas Iscariot the night before the Garden of Gethsemane, doing a little bit of Jesus stuff, not making it too religious," he said.
"How can you not make that too religious?" Joseph asked, laughing.
Details, details, Joseph!
