Because our MTV News team are fearless and intrepid, our reporter Christina Garibaldi spent an entire day hanging out on the set of “Warm Bodies“—and managed to have a lovely, informative chat with the cast even despite the obvious threat of having her brain eaten at any time. Such courage! And for anyone who’s missed the premise of this hotly anticipated mash-up between the zombie and romance movie genres, star Nicholas Hoult has it pretty well summed up:
“The zombies live in this airport,” he explained. “The humans have made a safe area in the city, and one day I go on a hunting mission. I kill one and eat his brains and relive his memory, and it turns out he was the boyfriend of Julie Grigo, Teresa Palmer’s character. And then I decide I quite like her and I want to keep her safe.”
There! Now you don’t even need to see the movie…except that c’mon, we all need to see this movie. It’s going to be amazing! Even the aforementioned Teresa Palmer thinks it’s terrific:
“When you think of zombie movies, you think of R-rated, everyone eating brains, blood and gore, craziness like that,” she said. “In our film, it’s great because we sort of get the best of both worlds. We get to see that typical zombie genre, but then there’s also a lot more emotional depth to our film…there’s a love story, and these zombies: they were once real people, and they still have the same feelings and thoughts, especially R.”
And speaking of the zombie protagonist of the film:
“He’s a beautiful soul,” Teresa gushed. “We always try to think about what he would have been like as a human, and he would have been the guy that you want to marry.”
So, y’know, nothing to be ashamed of if you exit the theater having doodled “Mrs. R. Deadperson” all over your popcorn container. Nothing at all.
