The swelling success of E L James' best-selling erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" has inspired more than just a renewed interest in antiquated equestrian implements—it seems publishers are now mining the world of "Twilight" fanfic for their next best-seller. The latest in line for prime placement at your local Barnes & Noble: "Beautiful Bastard," a reworked version of "The Office," originally written by Christina Hobbs in 2009 and taken offline a few months later (per The Hollywood Reporter).
"Beautiful Bastard"—a joint work by Christina and fellow fanfic writer Lauren Billings, to be published under the nom de plume Christina Lauren—centers around a young intern named Chloe Mills, who finds herself caught in a love-hate relationship with her perfectionist boss Bennett Ryan. And while there are clearly shades of James' phenomenon here, Bennett Ryan actually preceded Christian Grey online, though not in print.
And much like James' trilogy, this isn't a one-shot deal: "Beautiful Bastard" will be published February 12, 2013, by Simon & Schuster's Gallery imprint, followed by sequel "Beautiful Stranger" on May 28, 2013.
More evidence it's "Twilight"'s world and we're just living in it.
