Because it was Halloween, Taylor’s interview opened with a nod or two to the holiday—including a photo, shared by the actor’s mom, of a teensy baby Taylor dressed as Batman. (Alas, Taylor’s grown-up Halloween plans included no such costume; he admitted that after the show, he was just gonna go home.) And when the talk turned to all the requisite world-touring he’s doing to promote his latest film, the thrills’n’chills theme reappeared once more: turns out that Taylor’s favorite stop on the media tour is Australia, primarily because it gives him the opportunity to go shark diving. Scary!
But then, it was time to talk turkey—and by “turkey,” we mean “Twilight.” For starters, Taylor reminisced about his early involvement in the franchise…and admitted that, at the outset, he hadn’t the faintest clue what was going on.
“I auditioned when I was 15, I filmed the first one just when I’d turned 16,” he explained. “I had no idea what ’Twilight’ was. I was asking my agent and manager, what is this ’Twilight’ thing?” And after getting an answer—in which the film was apparently summed up more or less by Taylor’s colleagues as “vampires in a forest”—the actor admitted to being a little bit skeptical. “I was like, that sounds weird.”
And then, as we all know, the movie’s buzz exploded—at which point Taylor, who had just met with director Catherine Hardwicke, started to catch wind of some big-deal film that sounded curiously like the one he was auditioning for. He laughed, recalling, “I was reading all this stuff, and I was like, is this the vampire forest movie?!”
Obviously, Taylor is fluent in all things sparkly vampire after four years of making these films—and he’s gotten quite close with Stephenie Meyer, who he admits to pranking around with during filming. (Watch this clip for the story about the “Team Edward” cake; trust us, it’s gold.) But when Jay finally turned the discussion to the current film, and to that not-quite-true-to-the-books ending that people keep buzzing about, Taylor went from open book to consummate professional…and gave up next to nothing.
“You know, there’s a very thin line, because the fans would freak on us if we changed anything too much,” he said, coyly. “But I can confirm there is a twist… and I can confirm everybody can find out what it is on November 16th.”
