Mary Queen of Scots: So hot right now. First came news that Saoirse Ronan would portray the 16th-century monarch in a big-screen biopic penned by Michael Hirst, and now Deadline is reporting that The CW is eyeing its own "fantastical re-imagining" of the teen queen's story called "Reign."
To be sure, Mary's tale is already an intriguing one without the Hollywood trappings: The monarch took the throne at the tender age of six days old (talk about precocious!), suffering a number of setbacks, including the murder of her husband and imprisonment in a castle.
According to the report, the project is being described as "Game of Thrones" meets Marie Antoinette, and is just the latest royal romp in development at The CW. You may recall that the network shot a pilot for the small-screen adaptation of Kiera Cass' "Bachelor"-style dystopian novel "The Selection." Starring Aimee Teegarden, the series is being re-shot next year after some tinkering.
With all of this renewed interest in the royals, all we have to say is: Long live the Queen!
