'Mortal Instruments' Finds Its Alec In Kevin Zegers?

A "Gossip" guy is reportedly headed to the Institute! According to JustJared.com, actor Kevin Zegers has been cast as Alec Lightwood in the big-screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's "Mortal Instruments" novel, "City of Bones."

The 27-year-old is the latest addition to the supernatural flick, which centers around teen Clary Fray (Lily Collins) as she discovers her true identity as a member of a long line of demon-destroying half-angels known as Shadowhunters. Alec, too, is a Shadowhunter and the adoptive brother of Clary's love interest Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower). But Alec is hiding a secret of his own—he is gay and in love with Jace, which means he doesn't take too kindly to Clary.

Kevin is probably best known for his multi-season arc as Damian on "Gossip Girl." He most recently appeared in the ABC mini-series "Titanic: Blood and Steel."

Production is slated to begin on "City of Bones" next month. In addition to Lily and Jamie, the film stars Jemima West as Isabelle, Robert Sheehan as Simon, Godfrey Gao as Magnus, Lena Headey as Jocelyn Fray, Jared Harris as Hodge, and Kevin Durand and Robert Maillet as Valentine's henchmen. Several key roles remain unfilled including the villainous Valentine and Jocelyn's long-time friend Luke.

"City of Bones" is slated for an August 2013 release.
