Deadline reports that the studio is getting ready to move forward on a cinematic reboot of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” the magically-abled young lady who first cast her spell as a character in mid-century Archie comics but, who most of us know best as the titular gal played by Melissa Joan Hart (who rivaled the human stars of “Sesame Street” in her abilities to act convincingly opposite a talking puppet.)
Among the updates made to the new “Sabrina” film: a more romantic backstory (and, please God, some better visual effects) for the talking black cat, a superhero-style take on Sabrina herself and, of course, a brand-new teenage actress to take on the witchy starring role. (But tell us this: Will they include an ’80s-style rap-off between a guy in pegged jeans and his spellbound crush? Because if not, WE WANT NO PART OF IT.) So, which leading lady might be best-suited to carry the broomstick when this film goes into production? We’ve got three promising picks!
This lightweight fantasy film might be a little too fluffy for serious actress Hailee, who wowed us in “True Grit” and just wrapped production on “Romeo & Juliet.” But there’s something so fresh-faced and…well, Melissa-Joan-Hart-y about her, we can’t resist suggesting that she take a break from her usual for a fun, witchy run.
Her best-known roles are on the creepy/villainous end of the spectrum (see: “Orphan,” “The Hunger Games”), but we still think there’s a good witch in her somewhere! Could the lead in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” be Isabelle’s entry point into more heroic territory? Talk about a spell-binding opportunity!
Chloe is no stranger to playing a superhero (see: “Kick-Ass”) or a supernatural (see: “Let Me In”), which means that a turn as a superhero spellcaster would be a walk in the park for her.
