Lionsgate Eyeing Oscar-Winning Scripter For 'Hunger Games' Sequel 'Catching Fire'

Catching FireThe smoke hasn't even cleared on the first full-length trailer for the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games," but Lionsgate already has a writer in its crosshairs for the follow-up, "Catching Fire."

Deadline is reporting that the studio hopes to reap Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar-winning writer of "Slumdog Millionaire," for the sequel. Apparently director Gary Ross (who will reportedly return for the second installment) was originally planning to work on the script with Suzanne, but post-production on the first movie is keeping him busy.

Simon certainly has some impressive credentials, which in addition to "Slumdog Millionaire" include "127 Hours" and "The Full Monty."

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer recently told Bloomberg that "The Hunger Games" would need to hit $100 million in domestic sales in order to justify sequels, but it looks like the studio isn't too concerned about clearing that hurdle seeing as preparations are quickly being made for "Catching Fire," which is slated for a November 22, 2013 release.

"The Hunger Games" hits theaters March 23, 2012.
