Nicki Minaj Inspired Betsey Johnson’s Latest Fashion Line

By Christina Garibaldi

When you are going to a Betsey Johnson fashion show, don’t expect a regular runway experience — expect a party. The 69-year-old pint size fashionista is not only one of the most respected designers on the planet, she's also the most fun. Usually backstage before a show, you can expect a hectic atmosphere, but not at Betsey's show. At her Fashion Week show, there was a DJ, cupcakes, balloons and models getting a signature "Betsey" tattoo from the designer herself. Oh, and yes — there were clothes there as well!

"It was all built all built around [T&A]," she said, using the long, less safe for work version of this phrase. "It's the full tilt. I always do my rock n' roll, I always do my pretty, this is the crème de la crème."

This line definitely showed Betsey at her best, combining all of her signature looks of leopard, sequins, floral, ruffles and lace.

"[The line] is from beautiful to punky to funky to pastel to bright, any old thing is right," Betsey gushed. "It's how you wear your body in your outfit."

And it was all about the body this Spring...and not just any body: Nicki Minaj’s

"I was watching Nicki Minaj and my daughter Lulu and I'm thinking, 'They are the body type," Betsey said of making the looks for her spring line. "I love [Nicki] and she really wears my stuff. She likes real tight. She's just my most, most, most favorite girl right now."

And her favorite girl was sitting front row at the show sporting a colorful tutu and blue cotton candy-like hair.

"She's a free spirit," Nicki said of Betsey. "When I met her the other day, I felt like I knew her for my whole life. She's so warm and considerate and caring. She's amazingly talented and I've been wearing her clothes forever, so to meet her was like, 'Yay!' [I was] bowing down to her; she's dope!"
