Ed Westwick Scores Fighting Role In 'Romeo And Juliet'

By my head, here come the Capulets! The upcoming film adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" now has not only its Juliet (Hailee Steinfeld, as previously reported), but hotheaded cousin Capulet as well—as Variety reports that Ed Westwick of "Gossip Girl" is in final negotiations for the role of Tybalt.

For those who haven't kept up on their Shakespeare, Tybalt is the play's chief antagonist and is ultimately killed by Romeo after he murders the leading man's bestie in a duel. (We'd say "Spoiler Alert," but...well, if you don't know what happens at the end of "Romeo and Juliet," then there's no way you're reading this from your lovely home under that rock.) And now that he's on board with the film, Ed is in some elite company: The role has been previously played by John Leguizamo and Alan Rickman, among others.

Casting seems to be moving slowly on this one; the only other role that's been filled is that of Juliet's Nurse, and despite several excellent suggestions as to who should play him, we're still waiting on our Romeo. It's okay though! This gives Ed plenty of time to practice his swordsmanship and work on his thumb-biting technique.

How do you like the idea of Ed Westwick toting old-school weaponry and wearing culottes? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
