‘Mortal Instruments’ Star Lily Collins Talks Finding The Perfect Simon

Yesterday, we brought you the exciting news straight from “Mortal Instruments” author Cassie Clare that casting has begun for Simon Lewis, heroine Clary Fray’s lovable best friend in the film adaptation of Cassie’s supernatural YA thriller.

Cassie made it clear, however, that the hapless rocker teen won’t be cast until a Jace is found, seeing as potential Simons will need to do a chemistry read with star Lily Collins and whoever is (FINALLY) cast as the impossibly beautiful Shadowhunter. But that caveat didn’t stop us from contemplating every possibility for this fun role. (Hollywood Crush readers seem to be fairly partial to Logan Lerman so far…) So it should come as no surprise then that when Lily stopped by the MTV News offices today to chat about her upcoming vampire action flick “Priest,” we made sure to get her take on the Simon situation, as well.

“Well, Simon is very much kind of the boy next door and he grows into a young man and obviously somewhat of a creature, as well,” Lily explained. “He’s very intellectual, smart, edgy. He’s more of the alternative guy. He’s also very vulnerable in the sense that Jace is, but I think he’s less confident with girls and with his looks and with himself.”

That’s not to say that Lily doesn’t see the appeal of this boy next door. “But that makes his journey all that much more exciting because he grows into his own in a different way than Jace does,” she continued. “But again, even physically they look very different and they have very different personalities and they’re from very different worlds.

“It’s going to be interesting to see the parallels that they can play between the two characters as well as contrasting them enough.”

Undoubtedly one of the greatest perks of “City of Bones” coming to the big screen will be seeing the intense chemistry between Clary and Jace that we’ve only imagined thus far. But I must add that I’m also excited to see the awkward tension between Clary’s two love interests. Bring on Simon!
