As Paula Malcomson Joins 'The Hunger Games,' We Round Up The Week's Casting News

It's been a whirlwind week for "Hunger Games" fans, with nearly every day bringing a new casting announcement for the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian thriller. And here's one more piece of news to take us into the weekend: Paula Malcomson has been cast as Katniss and Prim's mother.

The 41-year-old Irish actress is a T.V. vet, having starred in numerous series including "Caprica," "Sons of Anarchy," "John from Cincinnati" and "ER." She also has a few big-screen turns on her resume, with parts in "The Green Mile" and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence."

In a statement released by Lionsgate, producer Nina Jacobson had this to say about the casting: "Katniss and Prim’s mother has come back from the depths of despair. Her husband has been killed, resources are scarce and she must live in fear that either one of her daughters could be forced to participate in the Hunger Games. Needless to say, we needed an actress with some gravitas—someone who could really transport herself, and audiences, to a place as tough as District 12. Paula has appeared in some really top notch TV shows that are both extremely gritty and extremely imaginative, and she was the perfect choice for this role."

Paula rounds out this week's new additions, which include Amandla Stenberg, Dayo Okeniyi, Leven Rambin, Jack Quaid and Willow Shields.
