The same week her boyfriend Justin Bieber's new 3D documentary, "Never Say Never," is headed into theaters, Selena Gomez is aiming to solidify herself as a bona fide movie star. She made her big screen debut last year in the Beverly Cleary adaptation "Ramona and Beezus" and her next big film, "Monte Carlo," places her opposite leading ladies Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy.
Now Deadline is reporting that Universal is developing an adaptation of Jay Asher's novel "13 Reasons Why" starring Selena. She will play a high school student named Hannah Baker who, before she committed suicide, recorded seven cassette tapes with instructions for them to be passed around to the 13 people who played a role in her death (like a morbid chain letter of sorts).
When the novel was released in 2008, it received several prestigious awards, including ranking in the Young Adult Library Services Association as a Best Book for Young Adults. There are still many more characters to cast in addition to Hannah, though, and we have a couple of suggestions.
Who he is: He's the boy who finds Hannah's cassette tapes and who also had a huge crush on her. Clay acts as a narrator for much of the film.
Who she is: One of Hannah's friends who ditches her after Hannah is placed on a "hot" list and starts spreading rumors about her.
Who he is: Hannah's first kiss. He ends up spreading rumors about her, though, that earn her a bad reputation at school. His later misdeeds also lead to something terrible happening to Jessica.
Our casting suggestion: Justin Bieber. Because, come on, he has to make it into this film somehow, and it's too stereotypical for him to be the good guy.
Are you glad "13 Reasons Why" is being made into a film? Do you picture Selena as Hannah?
