Vanity Fair‘s Hollywood Issue: Where Is Ryan Gosling?

So. Many. Pretty. People. For its 17th annual Hollywood Issue, Vanity Fair went back to basics; in the magazine’s own words: “no teenagers, no penguins [though baby tigers seem to meet muster], no (full-on) nudity, just the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment.” And it’s quite a compilation indeed. The three-panel spread shot by Norman Jean Roy includes (from left to right): Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund and Noomi Rapace.

Yet, despite the impressive credentials represented here, I can’t help but lament one glaring omission: Ryan Gosling. If “the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment” was truly the litmus test for landing a spot on the cover, Vanity Fair gets a big scowly face from me for not including the 30-year-old.

There’s no denying 2010 was a banner year for Ryan. After a nearly three-year absence from the box office, the dreamy actor came back in a big way with the critically acclaimed drama, “Blue Valentine” co-starring Michelle Williams. The heart-wrenching drama earned Ryan his second Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, and his absence from this year’s Oscar nominations list was widely considered a major snub.

We’ll admit Ryan’s other 2010 film “All Good Things” was a flop (it earned an abysmal $500,000), but the two films certainly don’t cancel each other out. (Seriously, we checked with our 8th grade algebra teacher to be sure.) And 2011 is shaping up to be even bigger—he’s got a slew of upcoming projects Including his first comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” co-starring Steve Carell and Emma Stone, the action-thriller “Drive” with Carey Mulligan and George Clooney’s “The Ides of March.”

Plus, did we mention he looks damn fine in a suit?
