Last year was pretty darn great for Carrie Underwood, what with her Academy of Country Music Awards Entertainer of the Year honor, a huge engagement ring and a hunky husband. But it's 2011 now, and the country cutie has surfed her way onto a new stage: the silver screen. Carrie makes her feature film debut in the upcoming "Soul Surfer," and the teaser trailer is out today!
Think the classic surfer-chick movie "Blue Crush" meets Britney Spears' "innocent southern girl" debut in "Crossroads," and you get the basic feel for "Soul Surfer." Now, I'm always a little wary of singers trying to cross over and get serious in movies, but if a Justin Timberlake movie can get a Golden Globe nomination, anyone can do it..right?
While the trailer has absolutely zero dialogue, it's pretty apparent this will be a feel good, inspiring story (er, minus the blood and missing arm part). The trailer plays to the inspiring song "You're Never Alone" by Shannon Noll with lyrics like, "Sometimes you have to lose it all/close your eyes and take the fall/and then you'll know you're never alone." Awww...
The movie is based off the true story of Bethany Hamilton (played by AnnaSophia Robb) whose surfing ambitions hit a snag when she loses her left arm in a shark attack. The plot centers around her difficult recovery and quest to continue doing what she loves. Carrie will play a motivating church youth leader, who we assume will push Bethany to get back on her board.
The trailer includes lots of sun-bleached hair, surfing contests, and "ab-alicious" surfers, including surfer-dad Tom Hamilton played by Dennis Quaid. Carrie only makes a cameo in the trailer, but it seems like she is a vital component in Bethany's return to the surf.
The movie hits theaters April 15!
What do you think about the "Soul Surfer" trailer? Are you excited to see Carrie Underwood act?
