Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman Go Dark For The Gotham Awards Red Carpet

Last night's Gotham Awards in New York City were a special treat for us. Not only did we spot some of our faves on the red carpet, including Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, but for the first time in what seems like ages, the carpet wasn't flooded with teeny-tiny mini-dresses. Shocking! Maybe it was the weather (but probs not since we saw a lot of shoulders and very few jackets), but most of our gals wore demure, black, knee-length looks. Keep reading to find out who was a dream in dark hues and who was just a snooze.

We can't help it, we absolutely love it when a celeb steps out in a look that's somewhat attainable. So when we heard Natalie wore Lanvin for H&M, we were all over it. While we couldn't find the exact one-shoulder dress that she wore to the event on H&M's site, we did find one that's dangerously close for $200. Not bad for red carpet ready, right? Natalie's "Black Swan" co-star Mila pulled off a similar (but totally out of our price range) look on the carpet in a strapless LBD by Oscar de la Renta that had some serious attitude. We loved the sleek black belt and the fact that Mila topped off the edgy dress with a casual up-do.

Joining Natalie and Mila, was Winona Ryder, who like her "Black Swan" co-stars, also opted for black and strapless (okay, these ladies must have talked before getting ready!). We felt like Winona's long Dolce & Gabbana dress was a bit overwhelming on her. In fact, while we were excited about the lack of mini-dresses on the carpet, we actually wish Winona's dress showed off her legs a little more, if only to add some height to the overall look. Newly announced Oscar host Anne also hit the carpet in a dark, strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress, although hers was floral-printed. We thought the attire was well-fitted but wish she had added a little more oomph with a more voluminous hairstyle or more eye-catching accessories. We did love the black pumps though!

While we liked most of the little black dresses last night, we weren't really fans of Hilary Swank's Emilio Pucci frock. The ruching paired with lace felt a little dated, although we've got to admit that the back looked pretty great. While it may seem like nearly everyone stepped out in a strapless black dress last night, Leighton Meester totally defied the rules in a suit by Thom Browne. While we give the girl some serious props for taking a risk, we can't help but wish she had raided the "Gossip Girl" wardrobe closet for something a little more feminine (if only because we really like dresses!). That being said, Leighton knows how to pull off a suit better than most guys we know.
