It was a night of epic performances and countless wins, but where the 2010 American Music Awards really shined was the red carpet. From Rihanna’s mesmerizing gown to Taylor Swift’s brand-new style, there was no shortage of breathtaking looks and unexpected surprises, as many of our favorite celebs seriously stepped up their fashion game (although some took it a step too far). Keep reading to find out which stars owned the AMA red carpet, and which are still a work in progress.
Rihanna was gorgeous in an elegant, lacy, long-sleeved Elie Saab Couture gown. The maroon, floral frock, which she accessorized with a pair of hoop earrings, was one of the night’s most extravagant and eye-catching. While RiRi was by far our best dressed of the night, her BFF Katy Perry came a close second in a light pink, studded, Badgley Mischka strapless gown. The look was tamer than usual for Katy (no blue wigs this time!), but we thought it worked well for her.
Miley Cyrus almost got it right on the AMA red carpet. The “Can’t Be Tamed” singer arrived in a gorgeous, short (we’ll admit, we wish it was an inch longer), strapless, white Marchesa dress. We thought the outfit was perfect, until we caught sight of the long white train billowing behind her. We get that it was meant to add a little oomph to her look, but the distracting element seemed more appropriate for walking down the aisle, not the red carpet.
Miley’s unexpected train wasn’t the only thing that made us do a double-take; Taylor’s new style totally caught us off-guard as well. In a marked deviation from her usual style (very classic and colorful), Taylor arrived in a sultry, short, studded black and white dress. It was her new hairstyle though that really got everyone talking. Taylor went from cute wavy locks, to sleek straight hair (with a few streaks of black!) and heavy bangs. Now, the transition from cute to edgy isn’t an easy one to make, but Taylor pulled it off flawlessly, and we can’t wait to see more of this new style.
Speaking of hairdos, Ke$ha really went over the top with a sharp Mohawk that undoubtedly required multiple bottles of hair gel. As for her outfit, let’s just say it reminded us off a longer version of her VMA dress, except that this one apparently went through the shredder. As far as fashion risks go, we know we can always count on our Barbie, Nicki Minaj. But the female MC might have taken it a step too far in a heavily embroidered Manish Arora pink dress that appeared to take some inspiration from ancient Egypt. We can’t help but wish Nicki had stepped out without all the embellishments, as the pink dress underneath totally works for her.
