Garrett Hedlund Talks Prepping For ‘On The Road’ With Kristen Stewart: ‘She’s Fantastic’

By George Loomis

There’s nothing quite like watching a big action star get all mushy about a project (really, there isn’t… watch the clip for yourself!). During MTV News and MySpace’s live stream Friday (July 23) to promote “Tron Legacy,” Garrett Hedlund relished the opportunity to gush about his fellow actors in both “Tron” and the upcoming adaptation “On the Road.”

“I’ve been on [‘On the Road’] since the fall of ’07, and it’s sort of been on my mind since then,” Garrett told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. “When we jump onto projects like this, we’ve sort of got to tie that kite to a post and hope that it’s still flying as high as it was when you come back to it. Luckily, now with coming off ‘Tron’ and going into that, we’ve got to take that kite off.”

We’re glad to see Garrett using grand literary metaphors to express himself in interviews, which feels appropriate given the fact that “On the Road” is based on Jack Kerouac’s beloved novel. Garrett confirmed that the four-week beatnik “boot camp” Kristen Stewart told us about last month is now underway in Montreal, where the actors prepare for an August shoot through “intensive research with biographers.”

Kristen explained that she was “really nervous” about “On the Road,” but Garrett’s comments give the “Eclipse” actress reason to cool her nerves. “She’s got it all there. She’s where she needs to be and further. She’s fantastic,” Garrett said of Kristen, who told us in June that Garret is “a great guy… super into it.” Kristen plays the wife of Garrett’s character, road-tripping hero Dean Moriarty.

Garrett — who is known for action flicks like “Troy” — went on to praise the entire cast, including Sam Riley and a noticeably back-on-the-scene Kirsten Dunst. “We’ve had wonderful times up there in Montreal. Just hoping to make a wonderful film that can fulfill everyone’s expectations of what this can actually be. The family that we’re surrounded by is wonderful and unbelievable and, for me, I’m kind of on cloud nine.”

Are you ready for Garrett and Kristen in 2011’s “On the Road”? Could Kristen have found a chemistry to top her performances opposite Robert Pattinson?
