‘Mean Girls 2′ Is Happening, But Don’t Confuse It With ‘Mean Moms’

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, information has come out that Paramount Pictures is holding an open casting call for “Mean Girls 2,” which means the much rumored film is finally underway. Don’t confuse this with “Mean Moms,” another quasi-sequel that we learned about last month. Still, neither film looks like it will be a direct sequel to the 2004 hit.

This sequel will be directed by Melanie Mayron, who is best known for her work on “thirtysomething.” Here is the official synopsis: The story revolves around a new high school student, Jo, who agrees to befriend an outcast, Abby, at the urging of Abby’s wealthy father in exchange for paying all of Jo’s costs for the college of her dreams. Jo and Abby team up to take on the school’s “mean girls,” the Plastics. The story becomes a high stakes battle of loyalty that ultimately comes to a head when one of our heroines finds out that her friendship has been bought and paid for.

Basically it sounds like a reimagining of the first film, much like the “Bring It On” installments followed a similar storyline of the original.

While we don’t have a ton of info on the movie yet, we’ll definitely be bringing you more details as soon as we get them. Right now, a source close to production told us that filming is set to start in July in the Atlanta area. They didn’t have any info on the cast, but based on the press release Paramount sent out, the studio seems to be looking for some relative unknowns.

Are you shocked that there is going to be a “Mean Girls” sequel? Is this something you are looking forward to seeing?
