Bill Condon Officially Chosen As 'Breaking Dawn' Director

This one comes as no surprise: Summit has chosen director Bill Condon to helm "Breaking Dawn." With that big decision out of the way, it seems like answers to the other big "Breaking Dawn" questions — one or two parts, 2-D or 3-D, filming and release dates — will be soon to follow.

Summit sent out a press release today with the announcement, and included several statements from Summit president Erik Feig, author Stephenie Meyer (who is listed as a producer — a first for her in the movie franchise!) and Bill himself. Check them out after the jump!

Says Stephenie: "I'm so thrilled that Bill wants to work with us. I think he's going to be a great fit, and I'm excited to see what he does with the material."

Says Erik: "Bringing Stephenie Meyer's 'Breaking Dawn' to the screen requires a graceful and intelligent hand and we believe Bill Condon is exactly the right steward, having shown equal and abundant talents of immense creativity and subtle sensitivity."

Says Bill: I'm very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen. As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book — and we're hoping to create an equallyunique cinematic experience."

Ever since word got out that Bill was on the short-list of directors Summit had chosen to helm the project, we've been a bit hesitant about jumping on the bandwagon. Gus Van Sant and Sophia Coppola seemed like they would have been better fits, but rumor has it that at least Sophia was only willing to direct the project if it was one film. We're assuming Summit is leaning towards the two-part route, and can see Bill being willing to work with that.

We're keeping an open mind with this decision, and have faith that Bill is a great enough director to pull off the massive task of bringing "Breaking Dawn" to the big screen. However, if we don't get at least one song-and-dance number as a special feature on the eventual DVD(s), we're going to feel really ripped off.

Are you surprised by this announcement? Do you think Bill Condon is the right fit for "Breaking Dawn"?
