Now, while we said in our Oscars best dressed post that we loved many of the looks from last night, it really wouldn’t be a red carpet without some major disappointments. Anyway, before we get started, just one note to all the ladies who made the cut on our worst dressed list this year, don’t despair. If Mariah Carey can bounce back, trust us, so can you.
First up on our list of “major disappointments” would have to be “Avatar” star Zoe Saldana. Now, we think Zoe’s gorgeous and frankly, we thought she could pull off pretty much anything. But really, her Givenchy Couture gown was ridiculous. The top-half was stunning, but the bottom looked like someone threw on a slew of purple pom-poms at the last minute. Joining her on the worst dressed list is Charlize Theron in a lackluster Dior. We didn’t mind the shade of lilac (see Queen Latifah on our best dressed list), but the placement of those roses was simply, um, just wrong.
If you checked out our best dressed list, you probably already know that gold was a big color on the carpet last night. Some actresses, like Cameron Diaz did it right, while others like Sarah Jessica Parker did it wrong, so, so wrong. SJP’s Chanel Couture dress felt like it was trying way too hard to be something special with the silver roses and the strap across the neck but really it just didn’t work. We’re pretty sure Carrie Bradshaw would not approve of something so potato-sacky. Now, we usually love Diane Kruger’s style (forgetting, of course, about her bubble gum pink Golden Globes get up), but we have no idea what she was thinking at the Oscars. Like SJP, Diane also went with Chanel Couture and again, we didn’t like it. The dress just had too much going on, and we’re all about restraint. Also, a little makeup wouldn’t have hurt.
We felt like Kate Winslet sold herself short with a strapless silver Yves Saint Laurent dress. Kate looked totally gorge with her loose wavy hair and fresh makeup, but the dress was a snooze. This is the Oscars people, not an office holiday party! Where Kate needed to step it up, Vera Fargima needed to take it down a notch … or maybe 10. Vera’s gown had way too many ruffles and completely overwhelmed her. Fail.
