OK, most of you know that we've been waiting for the Oscars to come around for practically forever. Seriously, every other award show just felt like such a tease. Thankfully, the wait was over last night as our favorite Hollywood stars put on their very best to hit the 2010 Academy Awards red carpet, and boy did we love it. We were glued to the TV as we watched both youngins like Miley Cyrus and Kristen Stewart, as well as long-time actresses like Sandra Bullock rock gorgeous gowns that totally blew us away. Anyway, we know you've been waiting to see all the hits and misses from last night, so let's get to it!
Now, "Last Song" star Miley Cyrus hasn't always impressed us with her red carpet style but the teen queen definitely took us by surprise at the Oscars when she showed up in stunning gold Jenny Packham dress. The strapless gown was a perfect choice for such a glamorous night and it ranked as one of our top favorites (if not the favorite). Also, it's easy to go overboard when your 16-years-old, but we thought her look was totally age appropriate.
We weren't as surprised by our love for Anna Kendrick's romantic Elie Saab gown though. Anna has always been one of our red carpet favorites and the Oscars were no different. We loved the color of the dress, the draping, slit and of course makeup.
While Miley and Anna chose softer colors, "An Education" star Carey Mulligan went with a darker look but it still totally worked. Carey hit the red carpet in a strapless Prada gown with gold embellishments, which managed to be both formal with a little bit of edge. Anna's "New Moon" co-star Kristen Stewart also wore a dark color, midnight blue, and while we haven't always loved Kristen's style, we couldn't stop gushing over her fabulous Oscars look. The black strapless Monique Lhuillier dress looked great on Kristen and we thought the decision to go with a classic up-do was totally on point. Our one gripe? We would have loved to see more bling. But we won't hold that against her, especially since she did such a good job of holding her posture for the pictures!
While we said earlier that Miley's look was one of our favorites, we have to admit that Elizabeth Banks' light blue, strapless Versace gown makes her a top contender for the spot. Elizabeth was the epitome of perfection in the piece, which featured a fitted bodice and ruffled bottom. We saw a lot of light colors on the red carpet but few stood out like Elizabeth's. However, Queen Latifah also scored top marks with us with her lilac Badgley Mischka gown. We thought the silhouette of the dress looked fantastic on Queen L. and we loved the silver embellishments across the shoulder and the waist.
Another red carpet win last night had to be Cameron Diaz. Cam definitely took a risk by rocking a heavy gold Oscar de la Renta dress (which could have easily been over the top) but she made it work. Also, while most of the red carpet gals (at least the ones who made it on to our list) had up-dos, Cam let her hair down and kept it wavy. The result was a classic old Hollywood look that matched perfectly with her gown. "Blindside" star Sandra Bullock — and best actress winner! — also hit the red carpet in gold last night, and once again, we loved it (OK, fine. we admit, we loved a lot of looks last night…but that's a good thing!). We were really happy with Sandra's Marchesa dress, which was less flowy and more fitted than most of the gowns we saw. Also, the lace work at the top was simply phenomenal.
While most of our top starlets worked with major designers to perfect their Oscars look, Meryl Streep went a different route. Meryl's dress was designed by none other than "Project Runway" finalist Chris March. The white dress looked fabulous on Meryl, and the fact that she went with an up-and-coming designer made it all the better. In addition to Meryl, we also loved Helen Mirren's silver Badgley Mischka gown and Sigourney Weaver's red Lanvin. Just goes to show that mature women can really teach us a thing or two about glamour!
It wasn't easy to pick a top 10 best dressed list this year, because frankly there were so many great gowns. So, we figured it was only fair to throw in some honorable mentions. First up, is definitely Mariah Carey in blue Valentino. We'll be the first to admit that we've been hard on Mariah's red carpet looks in the past (deservingly so). But we're also about giving credit where it's due, and it's definitely due to Mariah. The dress looked fantastic on her, mainly because it appropriate and fitted (That's all it really takes MC!). We also can't finish up this list without mentioning Maggie Gyllenhal who wore a unique Dries Van Noten strapless gown. We didn't adore the pattern (we've see it around a bit), but we thought the fit and color looked great.
