It's a shame Taylor Swift was out of the country and unable to accept her five American Music Award statuettes — including Best Artist — in person. We always enjoy the 19-year-old's frilly, fairy tale looks on the red carpet. But that doesn't mean our fashion fairy godmother didn't gift us with a few fabulous frocks to fawn over at last night's big event.
With the night's standout look, Barbados beauty Rihanna hit the right note in a black-and-white laser-cut Marchesa that looked more like a beautifully-etched vase than an awards show gown. Take note divas: This is the kind of dress to make a comeback in. Fellow singing siren Shakira also opted for cut-outs, though less-attention-grabbing triangles decorated her sunny yellow Versace minidress.
Teen singing sensations Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato opted for more neutral palettes, with Selena looking every inch the adult in a sequined sheath by Talbot Runhof. BFF Demi went nude (a nude-colored dress that is!) in a ruffly Jenny Packham dress with a jeweled neckline. We're loving the soft feel of Demi's dress, but we're a little perplexed over her harsh brows. Step away from the brow pencil, Miss Lovato!
Before closing the show with his jaw-dropping, raunchtastic performance of "For Your Entertainment," "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert(above, left) looked almost demure (by Glambert standards, that is) in a slick black suit with black tie and blue eyeliner. His fellow "Idol" alum, season eight winner Kris Allen, looked as cute as ever in a gray pin-stripped suit with black shirt, tie and matching pocket square.
The ladies of the upcoming movie musical "Nine" were all in unison, opting for varying shades of metallic for the star-studded event. Nicole Kidman accompanied hubby and Best Country Male Artist winner Keith Urban to the show wearing a fluttery Balenciago gown with a figure-unflattering pink sash detail, while Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie (who took home a couple statues including Favorite Pop/Rock Band) sparkled in a curve-hugging Armani Prive black gown encrusted with hundreds of dazzling Swarovski crystals and a slit up to there. Not to be outdone, Kate Hudson rocked a low-cut vintage Versace chainmail (yes, chainmail!) minidress. We just have one word for this stunning frock: Brrrrrr!
Divine Demi wasn't the only starlet who opted for barely-there color. Country cutie Carrie Underwood looked radiant in her shimmery gold lamé Theia and we couldn't love her new, shoulder-length 'do any more, while "Couples Retreat" star Kristen Bell looked like she'd stepped right off the islands, baring a sliver of her taut tummy in a two-piece ivory Christian Cota ensemble.
What do you think, Crushers? Whose looks were sharp and whose fell flat?
