'Valentine's Day' Trailer: A Little Cliche?

Surprisingly, this "Valentine's Day" post isn't to report a new super famous face joining the Hollywood-heavy cast. Nope. Though it seems like just yesterday we were flush with casting news and on-set photos, somehow a trailer for the February 2010 release is already upon us!

Much how I anticipate the movie to be structured, the "Valentine's Day" trailer flashes from super-star couple to super-star couple. There's Julia Roberts and Bradley Cooper! Anne Hathaway and Topher Grace! Hector Elizondo and Shirley Maclaine! Patrick Dempsey and Jennifer Garner! It's like standing on the red carpet at the Academy Awards (or so I imagine).

It's hard not to be amused by the 90-second trailer, what with the Black Eyed Peas' infectious "Tonight's Gonna Be A Good Night" as its soundtrack. But the Garry Marshall-directed film seems to be trafficking the same rom-com cliches we've seen time and time again. Two strangers (seemingly) meet on a plane (Julia and Bradley). A career-aholic woman (Jessica Biel) downs a box of chocolates while bemoaning her lackluster love life (at least her Blackberry vibrates!). A suave doctor (Patrick) cheats on his wife.

One thing I loved about the similarly-styled "Love Actually" was its portrayal of unconventional relationships, like the soft-hearted sister who took care of her sick brother, to the detriment of her own happiness, or the grieving husband who fostered his step-son's lovesick heart. I have a feeling "Valentine's Day" will not be so creative or touching with its central relationships. But I know already that come February I'll be in the theater just like everyone else, with the Whitman Sampler my mom is sure to send me tucked away in my oversized purse.
