It's all about balance when it comes to picking the perfect frock for the Emmys red carpet (not to mention strutting in those sky-high heels too!). Not as formal as the Academy Awards but not as playful as the Video Music Awards, the Emmys require a certain fashion middle ground -- meaning they're perhaps more prone to sartorial slip-ups.
But as we get ready for the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards this Sunday, we're taking a look back at the red carpet looks that gave us goosebumps -- in a good way. Here are our five favorite looks from the past few years (in no particular order):
Katherine Heigl (2006) - Click here to see the dress
It's a toss up between the "Grey's Anatomy" star's 2007 white Zac Posen fishtail frock and this skin-toned (and skin-tight) Escada gown. Though she took home the Emmy in the Posen dress, we give Katherine the style award for her Escada since it shows of her, uh, assets the best.
Heidi Klum (2007) - Click here to see the dress
The "Project Runway" host and supermodel mom made it work in this raspberry Dior by John Galliano. But let's be serious, Heidi could show up in a paper bag and still own the red carpet.
Marcia Cross (2005) - Click here to see the dress
Never one to settle for basic black, the "Desperate Housewives" star looked stunning in her emerald green Elie Saab gown topped by her flowing red curls. Perhaps Bree should steal this look for her next cookbook cover?
Olivia Wilde (2008) - Click here to see the dress
She may be on the cutting edge of medical technology as doctor Thirteen on "House," but on the red carpet Olivia is all Old Hollywood glamour in this pearl-gray Reem Acra gown. We think House would approve.
Brooke Shields (2008) - Click here to see the dress
In a year dominated by dark hues and shiny metallics, statuesque Brooke stood head and shoulders above the rest (more so than usual) in this fuchsia tiered Badgley Mischka gown.
