'Potter' star Daniel Radcliffe Waves His Celebrity Wand For A Worthy Cause --The Trevor Project

We love a juicy celeb story — whether laden with romance or mischief or both, but we're total suckers for stars who use their power for good — especially when they're youngsters themselves with millions of fans who already look up to them, and their name is Daniel Radcliffe.

It was announced today that the "Harry Potter" actor has put his support, as well as a considerable financial donation behind non-profit organization The Trevor Project, a nationwide 24-hour crisis and suicide prevention helpline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Major props to Daniel for this bold, respectable effort. It's one thing to get behind a familiar cause like "Go green" or "Save the Whales," but quite another to speak out to bring awareness to a polarizing, sensitive subject that faces many teens today.

“I've grown up around gay people and I'm taken aback when I learn about the struggles faced by many gay youth," the actor told USA Today. "It's wonderful if I can use my profile to help this deserving organization grow and save more lives."

The 20-year-old British actor said he hopes his involvement helps youth understand they are not alone and that their young lives have real value. “It's extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top three killer of young people," Daniel said. "And it's truly devastating to learn that LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers."

In addition to his financial contribution which will help support The Trevor Project's programming efforts, Radcliffe — who is hard at work in England filming the final two "Potter" films — hopes to help further broaden awareness of the organization.

What do you think about Daniel's generous donation?
