'New Moon' Soundtrack News: Death Cab's 'Equinox' To Be First Single (It's 'About Relationships Beginning & Ending')

In addition to Bon Iver, Thom Yorke (the lead singer of Radiohead) and Muse, Death Cab for Cutie has joined the leagues of artists recording original songs for the upcoming "New Moon" soundtrack. Death Cab's submission, "Meet Me on the Equinox," will be the first single released from the album and will debut exclusively on MTV.com on September 13, the day of the VMAs.

"I think that a lot of our songs in general concern a lot of the things the main characters in the books are going through: There's a lot of stuff about relationships beginning and ending, and the questioning that happens around being in love and falling out of love," bassist Nick Harmer told MTV News in a recent interview.

He said songwriter Ben Gibbard didn't write the song from any "Twilight" characters' perspective, but the new song fit with the tone of "New Moon." "When you hear it, you'll think, 'Yep, that's a Death Cab song," he added.

Death Cab, who also hail from the Pacific Northwest, appreciated Stephenie Meyer's shout out to Fork, Wash. "There's this sort of hometown pride kind of thing going on," Nick said.

Even with the insane popularity Death Cab has received in the past decade, they still had to go through the same submission process to get on the soundtrack as everyone else.

"We didn't expect it would be chosen for the first single we were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe," the musician laughed. "I have no idea if Stephenie Meyer approved it or what. It's been an exciting process, because we've been so removed from it. We were in L.A. for a week and we went into the studio and wrote and recorded the song and submitted it. We didn't know where anything stood, and then we just got a call last week like, 'Guess what your song has been chosen as the first single.'
