Taylor Kitsch Going From Gambit To ‘John Carter of Mars’

By Brian Warmoth

Taylor Kitsch, known for his heartthrob status on “Friday Night Lights” and recently as the Cajun mutant Gambit in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” has picked his next role, and it looks like he’ll be going into outer space. Taylor has signed on to play the title character in the new movie “John Carter of Mars,” which adapts the classic pulp sci-fi novel of the same name by “Tarzan” creator Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Kitsch will appear alongside his “Wolverine” co-star Lynn Collins in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “WALL-E” director Andrew Stanton is onboard to direct.

If Taylor plays the part well enough, Disney appears to be hoping this franchise could stir up the same level of success as their Johnny Depp “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. In the period sci-fi story, John Carter is an American Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to Mars under mysterious circumstances and gets pulled into a war between races on the desolate planet. Lynn will play Dejah Thoris, the queen-to-be in Mars’ Helium kingdom.

Taylor reportedly beat out “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” actor Josh Duhamel for the lead role in the film, a bit of a coup for the young actor.
