Coldplay Release Heartfelt Song ‘Everglow’ Featuring Gwyneth Paltrow

Chris Martin's ex-wife provides backing vocals on the gorgeous new ballad.

Earlier this week, Coldplay shared snippets of every song from their forthcoming seventh album, A Head Full Of Dreams, out Dec. 4. Even with just a 15-second preview, it was clear that at least one of those tracks, “Everglow,” would find Chris Martin and company assuming familiar piano ballad territory with gorgeous melodies and strong vocals.

Now, Coldplay have released the song in full — and in an interesting twist, Martin’s ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, provides backing vocals on the track.

Martin stopped by Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show Thursday (Nov. 26) to premiere the song in full and to reveal some insight into its meaning.

“I was in the ocean one day with this surfer guy, who spoke just like you’d imagine a surfer guy to speak,” Martin said. “He was like, ‘Yo dude, I was doing this thing the other day man, it gave me this total everglow!’ I was like, ‘What an amazing word!’ Then the song came completely out.”

Paltrow’s vocals do appear throughout the song, which finds Martin reminiscing on a lost relationship, his feelings both nostalgic and content. “So if you love someone, you should let them know/ Oh, the light that you left me will overflow,” he sings.

“To me, it’s about — whether it’s a loved one or a situation or a friend or a relationship that’s finished, or someone’s passed away — I was thinking about, after you’ve been through the sadness of something, you also get this everglow,” he further explained to Lowe. “And that’s what it’s about.”

A Head Full Of Dreams also features vocals from a talented and wide-ranging roster of guests, including Beyoncé, Blue Ivy Carter, Noel Gallagher, Tove Lo, Martin and Paltrow’s children, President Barack Obama, and Martin’s current girlfriend, Annabelle Wallis.
