Earth Might Be Covered In Dark Matter ‘Hairs,’ Which Sounds Very Space Goth

Earth just doesn't understand why it's full of SHEEPLE.

Earth might be in a bit of a ~hairy~ situation, and it involves some ~spooky scary~ space stuff called dark matter: "an invisible, mysterious substance that makes up about 27 percent of all matter and energy in the universe," according to NASA.

Basically, Earth is emo, mom. NOT scene.

While dark matter might sound like a high school garage band (which, let's be real, it probably is), it's actually a big ol' space mystery, since it's never been directly detected by scientists. But a new study from Gary Prézeau of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is giving us an inside look at this incredible enigma.

Prézeau used computer simulations to find out what happens when streams of dark matter go through planets, including Earth. "His analysis finds that when a dark matter stream goes through a planet, the stream particles focus into an ultra-dense filament, or 'hair,' of dark matter. In fact, there should be many such hairs sprouting from Earth." NASA reports. "A stream of ordinary matter would not go through Earth and out the other side. But from the point of view of dark matter, Earth is no obstacle."

These "hairs" have "roots": In this case, they're about 600,000 miles from Earth, while the "tip" is about 1.2 million miles away.

"If we could pinpoint the location of the root of these hairs, we could potentially send a probe there and get a bonanza of data about dark matter," Prézeau said.

In conclusion, IT'S NOT A PHASE MOM.
