Before he started slinging rhymes, A$AP Ferg was knee-deep in fashion and design culture, so it makes sense, then, that he's finally got his own line of apparel and shoes to show for it.
On Dec. 5, the Harlem rapper will officially debut his new Traplord x adi-Ease adidas Skateboarding collection at Art Basel in Miami, which was inspired by his hometown and by the late mastermind, A$AP Yams.
The staples of the collection are black suede sneakers with gold accents, and a Traplord x adidas Yams t-shirt, both of which incorporate original designs from Ferg himself.
"I went to Art and Design High School [in New York City], my major was fashion and my minor was fine arts, so I was always painting and doing abstract art," Ferg told MTV News, during an interview at the Living Room at W New York, Times Square, going on to explain how he made Yams a part of the collection.
"I painted Yams at a table and he's creating the world that we live in," he detailed. "He had the vision -- that's the yellow light you see coming out of his eyes, and the rigid city behind him, that's where we come from. The bottom is the blueprint of the A$AP brotherhood, love and peace. I wanted to create my own piece of him, so I put a little piece of the painting on each shoe. On each sole, you'll get a different part of the painting."
The 27-year-old said that the collection felt true to his origins, and the diverse crowd that he grew up with in New York City,
"I'm not a skateboarder, but I am a fan of the culture. We always stuck together, whether you rode bikes or skateboards -- if you were different, we stuck together, we all went to the same parties and had the same buddies. I'm just doing everything I can to innovate the culture and push it forward."
