DKNY’s Latest Campaign Stars Real New Yorkers

FYI: New York commuters don’t generally look this good.

Back in February, DKNY did the unprecedented and subbed a diverse group of New Yorkers for traditional models in their Fall 2014 show. It was totally unexpected to see rapper Angel Haze, A$AP Mob’s A$AP Illz, and House of Ladosha’s Juliana Huxtable (among others) strut down the catwalk—and it became one of the biggest talking points of the season, earning stellar reviews. So, for their fall campaign, DKNY decided to stick with what was working and used most of their Fall 2014 cast as models for their new ads.

The first thing you’ll notice about the new campaign is that Rita Ora has stepped in. While she didn’t walk on the DKNY runway in February, she did in September. Plus, with so many DKNY campaigns under her belt, Rita has become such a good model that her presence here almost entirely distracts from the fact that she doesn’t actually, y’know, live in New York. She pretty much slays, with her jagged-cut platinum bob, in super-cute outerwear, denim, leather, and more.

One takeaway from the campaign is how fashion has been moving towards valuing authenticity and credibility this year more so than in the past. Between DKNY’s New Yorker campaign, Marc by Marc Jacobs’ crowd-sourced Instagram campaign, and Vanessa Hudgens’ decision to forgo retouching for her Bongo campaign, it seems this fall’s campaigns are striving to be real and we’re totally into it.
