Hope y’all have been stocking up on some killer lingerie because underwear-as-outwear has officially become a thing. Whether it’s bra over a tee (like Iggy Azalea in her “Fancy” music video, above), dress, or (gasp!) jacket, no article of clothing is safe from a total undergarment takeover. Don’t believe us? Well, we gathered some pretty solid evidence that the resurgence of this trend is in full force. Disclaimer: This isn’t a full timeline of every known bra-over-shirt occurrence, but a brief look back at this trend’s biggest pop culture/fashion moments in recent history. Also, corsets don’t count. Onward!
1995: THE TANK-OVER-TEE TREND PEAKS DURING THE ’CLUELESS’ ERA
Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in ’Clueless’.
Back in ’95, Cher Horowitz was seen sporting one of the biggest trends of the decade: tanks over tees. Yes, this isn’t technically a bra, but all trends have to start somewhere, and right now, we’re blaming Clueless (and Iggy’s homage to it) for its influence on the current iteration.

Susie Bubble wearing a bra over a shirt in 2007.
Back in 2007, the now-infamous fashion blogger Susie Bubble took a cue from MM’s spring collection and wore a strapless black bra over a neutral T-shirt dress. Her final verdict on the look? “Decidedly underwhelming.” There, there, Susie. There, there.
2009: MARC JACOBS THROWS BRAS OVER EVERYTHING IN SPRING 2010 COLLECTION

Marc Jacobs was the first designer to really take this trend by the balls. He threw a satin bra over virtually any type of ensemble: a button-up shirt and pencil skirt, a collared top and high-waisted shorts, and even a cropped sweater and harem pants.

Shortly after MJ debuted his underwear-as-outwear looks on the runway, Lady Gaga was seen sporting (very paint-splattered version of) the collection with her signature statement-making accessories.
2010: BRA-OVER-SHIRT TREND APPEARS ON STREET STYLE BLOGS
It’s one thing to see a bunch of exposed bras on a runway models, but it’s a whooooole other thing to see it on regular ol’ people IRL. In 2010, black bras paired with loose white tees were taking over street-style blogs, making a serious case for this slightly out-there trend.

Even though Man Repeller semi-jokingly took this look for a spin, we’re still mega into her layered (!!!) exposed bra look.

Uh oh, it’s Prada Spring/Summer 2014, y’all! That’s… right now, which means we can (apparently) start throwing bedazzled bras over everything in our wardrobe and call it a day. Side note: Theyskens also featured a more muted version of the bra-over-shirt ensemble in their spring collection as well.
2014: BRA-OVER-SHIRT TREND APPEARS IN JEAN PAUL GAULTIER’S PRE-FALL 2014 COLLECTION
Looks from Jean Paul Gaultier’s pre-fall 2014 collection.
So, we haven’t even hit fall 2014 yet, but Jean Paul Gaultier is already showing us that we need to wear a black leather bra over EVERYTHING (and we do whatever JPG says, so…).
