Zebra Katz’s ‘Tear The House Up’ Music Video: Look by Look

While you were sleeping this weekend, Zebra Katz, whom you might know from the earworm “Ima Read,” released a new music video for “Tear the House Up” (featuring Hervé). The Brandon LaGanke and John Calucci (of Ghost+Cow) video features some of our favorite menswear designers—Walter van Beirendonck, KTZ, Mark McNairy—in bright and bold, fully immersive environments. Dedicated followers of fashion will remember that Katz’s nod to Paris Is Burning (“Ima Read”) also provided the soundtrack to Rick Owens’ Fall/Winter 2012 Paris show. Hip-hop fans will appreciate his minimal, straightforward approach to electro-house. The rest of you with eyes will enjoy his fearless outfits—styled by Solange Franklin. And without further ado, let’s get into it.

The video opens up with several consecutive shots that zoom in on Zebra on a white throne in the midst of what can only be a McDonald’s PlayPlace on acid. Minus the face paint originally found on the runway, Katz is clothed head to toe in a look from Walter Van Beirendonck Winter 2014/2015 “Crossed Crocodiles Growl” collection. He has, however, accessorized with painted-on gold eyebrows.

And just as your eyeballs were settling in and adjusting to the bright colors, you’re in the moody visual space seen in “Last Name Katz.” A dark Xander Zhou coat with a hand-painted hand print that blends in with the background is all you notice at first, before Katz strips it off his shoulders.

You’re then greeted with a white polo with a silver placket and a sequined floral jacket from Jaime Lee. The gold stripe of makeup down the slope of his nose ties this look in with the previous one.

Here’s where we start jumping into multiple looks:

A sleeveless lavender tee, arm warmers, and a lilac Adrienne Landau faux-fur scarf. He coordinates this with a Bande des Quatres silver pendant. Eagle-eyed cherry viewers will note the gold eyeliner in the corners of his eyes.

We get a peek at a camo faux-fur coat from Mark McNairy.

Another runway look, this time from KTZ AW 13 Men’s collection along with Nike x Hood by Air boots, and Brute jewelry.

Another Walter van Beirendonck look. This time with a Stephen Jones x Walter van Beirendonck hat, David Andersen leggings, and Brute gold jewelry on the bridge of his nose. It appears that when Katz finds a strong visual narrative thread, he sticks with it. Anyone else picking up a strong Vivienne Westwood vibe?

Here we have a sequined camouflage jacket from Ashish and Doc Martens coordinated with back-up dancers in gold-cage jewelry and locks, obviously.

And for those of you at home who’d like to Tear Your House Up, I highly recommend copping a pair of High Gloss Brows from Face Lace in gold, duh.
