We’ve seen the teaser images and tweets from Katy Perry and Madonna regarding their S&M inspired photo shoot by Steven Klein for V magazine, but now that we have all of the images, can I just say how excited I am?

This isn’t the first time that either of them has played around with vintage styles and retro fashion: see Katy’s cover from her 2008 release One of the Boys. And Madge? She channeled Marilyn Monroe during her “Material Girl” phase and Marlene Dietrich in “Open Your Heart.” She moved away from streetwear-inspired looks in “Who’s That Girl?” and Desperately Seeking Susan (a personal fave) into full-on screen siren in 1990’s Dick Tracy, and has transformed into a million other Madonnas along the way (Evita Madonna, Kaballah Madonna, Latte-drinking Rapping Madonna, just to name a few) before returning to form in 2003’s “Hollywood” with fishnets, a bustier, and garter belts. (Also, there’s a moment where she’s draped over the television that calls back to “Take a Bow”. Is Madge being self-referential? Am I reading too much into her videography?) That’s not even counting W.E., which she directed and produced, and a handful of other music videos that either take place in or allude to the ’30s and ’40s. I suspect Madonna watches both TCM and AMC.

Madonna’s collaboration with Katy is interesting, though. Some have speculated—and I hate this phrase—that she might be “passing the torch” or cosigning on Perry. I’m not so sure. She’s done that before with other pop starlets (*achem* Miley: Unplugged anyone?). Their work together seems to be on the humanitarian front anyway. I am actually campaigning for them to work on a single or an album together because Katy’s fun. And through it all—her Sex book, the racy videos that dealt with themes of sexual ambiguity (“Vogue”) sadomasochism (“Human Nature” and “Erotica”), voyeurism (“Justify My Love”)—Madonna was fun.

This Bunny Yeager and Bettie Page-inspired shoot seems to be on the right track. Also, check out Katy’s nude merry widow and those short little leather gloves? Cute! And the runs in Madonna’s stockings? Celebs, they’re just like us.
