Our Favorite Braids From The 2014 Met Gala

If there's one time of year to try out the world's riskiest fashions, it would certainly be the annual Met Gala. For undeniable proof, see: last night. The 2014 Met Gala brought us tuxedos and tails, ball gowns the size of cars, and enough crazy hair and makeup trends to last us until next year. One such crazy hair trend? The braid.

I know, I know. Braids have been trendy for a while, but the hairstyles we saw last night were of an innovative, glammed-up generation of plaits. Check out our favorite looks from the House of Braids 2.0:

KRISTEN STEWART—THE MESSY FISHTAIL BRAID

In addition to giving her red hair its red-carpet debut, Kristen Stewart also picked the Met Gala to rock a messy yet fabulous fishtail braid. The casual feel of the braid contrasted beautifully with the deep '40s wave in the front—perfect for K-Stew's complex personal style.

JOAN SMALLS—THE SIDE-SWEPT FISHTAIL BRAID

Joan Smalls also went with a fishtail braid last night, but it couldn't have been more different than Kristen's. While K-Stew's hair was wild and intentionally unkempt, Joan's 'do was extra sleek and precise. Her clean fishtail braid went over her shoulder and cascaded all the way down to her bustline. This might be what Katniss Everdeen would look like if she ever attended the Met Gala.

EMMA STONE—THE EXPERTLY 'EFFED UP' SIDE BRAID

Emma Stone completely wowed us last night, and not just because of her gorgeous two-toned Thakoon dress. She had everyone talking when she showed up sporting THE messiest side braid. Her hairstylist described the braid to Fashionista as "effed up," and he meant that in the best way possible. The deceptively intricate style worked flawlessly with Emma's fun and playful persona. Also, sort of reminds us of Frozen.

JANELLE MONAE—THE POMPADOUR MOHAWK BRAID

Janelle Monáe's pompadour has become one of her trademarks, but she enhanced her signature look last night by adding a majorly epic braid. From the front, it looks like your average, over-the-shoulder braid. But then from the side, you notice that the braid actually originates from the pompadour, continuing down her entire head like a high-fashion mohawk.

LILY ALLEN—THE BRAIDED UPDO

Braids don't always have to be long and flowing, as evidenced by Lily Allen's stunning up-do. The singer's thick braids wrapped around her head to form an ultra-formal version of the milkmaid look, and the result was amazing. When you're wearing Chanel at the Met Gala, your hair HAS to be equally exquisite.
