Rita Ora Ruins Dress And Sneakers During ‘Fallon’ Performance

When an artist sees a blank canvas, the only natural reaction is to cover it. Enter Rita Ora. The singer appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night (April 23) to promote her new single, “I Will Never Let You Down,” wearing a poofy white dress and white Stan Smith trainers. She looked gorgeous as always, but the simple outfit was a far cry from the wild, kooky, colorful Rita outfits we know and love. Where was all the leather? The quilted denim? Where were the cartoon characters?

Don’t worry, Ritabots. The reason Rita wasn’t swaddled in custom, candy-colored snakeskin was lurking offstage in the form of artist Thierry Guetta (aka Mr. Brainwash). Moments into her live performance, Brainwash entered the spotlight and began pouring paint ALL over Rita’s clothes and body. By the end of the song, Rita looked like a piece of modern art.

There’s no doubt that Rita’s performance was unique, but funnily enough, it reminded us of two major liquids-meet-fashion moments. The first, and perhaps most obvious to the fashion set, was Alexander McQueen’s 1999 Spring/Summer show. For the climax of his 1999 runway presentation, McQueen put model Shalom Harlow in a pristine white dress and then had robots cover her with spray paint. Remember what I said about artists and blank canvases? But the waterfall of color and Rita’s prom-y looking dress were a perfect storm combination that ALSO reminded us of that scene in Carrie. You know the one. Though, luckily, Rita was saturated with a substance far less…porcine.
