Quick! Someone claim @pharellsshorts because that handle is going to go fast. [Editor's note: ZANGIT! Already taken.] For the Academy Awards, Pharrell Williams pulled the ultimate fake out and hit the red carpet in ~shorts~. The Best Original Song nominee (“Happy”) had been flaunting his now-iconic Vivienne Westwood hat across town leading up to the ceremony in a wide spectrum of colors. Naturally, we expected that he’d reprise its standout Grammys appearance at the Oscars, but Pharrell opted for a Lanvin shorts suit (sans headgear) instead.
It worked. We usually know what to expect from the men's side of the Oscars' red carpet: monochromatic suits with a splash of color here and there. But Pharrell is keeping us on our toes with this ensemble. It’s unexpected and cool and pretty much cements his current status as Hollywood’s biggest sartorial risk-taker. Although this time, he took a physical risk too, seeing as Los Angeles has been under storm watch all weekend long and, currently, it’s only a cool 62 degrees. Not exactly shorts weather. But well done, Pharrell. It's a risk that paid off. And that’s what Oscars fashion should be all about.
