Lorde's goth-leaning style is more than just a fleeting trend. From the sensible pantsuit she chose for her performance at the Grammys to the glittering, glamorous Tom Ford gown she wore last night at the Brit Awards, her typically dark palette is decidedly not a reflection of doom and gloom and teenage angst. In fact, her onstage outfits indicate an incredibly mature sense of self.

In the March issue of Vogue, Lorde is photographed looking like a modern-day flower child in a daisy-chain head wreath and a high-neck aqua gown adorned with tasseled beading. Not exactly goth (OK, not goth at all), but there's a resilience in her stance that exudes control over what she's wearing. In, like, a sword-wielding, Game of Thrones queen kind of way. “The kind of clothes that I’ve found I like to wear over the past year and six months have all been things that make me feel powerful and strong,” she says. Ditto for her style icons, a list which includes “people like Grace Jones and David Bowie, who have such a sense of themselves," she says.

With designers clamoring to dress the award-winning, 17-year-old pop phenomenon, Lorde says that she's found a few favorites in Comme des Garçons, Miu Miu, Moschino, and Simone Rocha. She also has a dog named Jimmy Choo, which isn't just a clue to her footwear preference (besides the beloved brick-soled boots, obvi), but also a pretty great pun (chew, get it?!).
