Taylor Swift, Beyonce, And More Are Best Dressed At 2014 Grammys

While the Grammys might not be held as sartorially high as the silver screen’s awards shows, what they lack in couture, they make up for in conversation-starting left-field looks, daring hairstyles, and crazy nails. This year there was a little more couture than usual, but also a greater discrepancy between those wearing it and their dressed-down counterparts. (We see you, Pharrell.) But that’s OK, because the artists who got a little more fancy than everyone else stood out (for the better) that much more.

TAYLOR SWIFT IN GUCCI

Not shockingly, Taylor Swift did not go bold this year—or veer away from her now-signature white/silver palette. We get it, Swift: You are obsessed with Madonna’s “Ray of Light.” Or you want to look like one. Whatever the case, while she stuck with her usual color choice, she at least toughened up her look a little thanks to Gucci’s chain mail gown, a nice risk to see and surely not a comfortable one.

KATY PERRY IN VALENTINO COUTURE

By now, we have seen time and time again Katy Perry’s love of themes. Remember that era when girl couldn't resist anything that remotely resembled candy, in shape or color? Those days may be long gone, but her pastel-pink Valentino couture gown still checked off that criterion and also the fact that, yes, it’s music-themed! Impressively, Perry secured the gown a mere four days after it walked down the Paris runway. Unlike the singer’s other themed ventures, this dress was quirky but also elegant. With a little help from well-considered hair and makeup, Perry totally pulled it off.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis didn’t ditch their thrift-shop aesthetic for red-carpet glitz. Instead they channeled it through a pair of modern suits—Lewis wore an oversized houndstooth print while Macklemore was styled in a teal velvet tux—that are bound for Topman’s shelves come this spring.

IGGY AZALEA IN ELIE SAAB

It’s safe to say that Iggy Azalea is the most elegant rapper in the game. She has quickly become a red carpet highlight, always opting for intricate gowns that flatter her frame. Her white, embroidered Elie Saab gown is no exception.

RITA ORA IN LANVIN

Rita Ora, you were hands down one of the best-dressed attendees. Your Lanvin dress has a life of its own, with its color-changing, iridescent fabric. And your happy-face nails, kinged with enough rings to melt and make Swift’s dress, added some much-needed life to this year’s mani game.

PARIS HILTON IN HAUS OF MILANI

To Paris Hilton, reserved means a rhinestone-encrusted gown with optical illusion tattoo panels, albeit one with a turtleneck, made by Haus of Milani. But that is exactly why we love her. She always owns her Dynasty-esque style, never seeking out gallery-cool looks or modern design. She is a true embodiment of the phrase be yourself.

DAFT PUNK IN SAINT LAURENT

Daft Punk impeccably served up their now-usual: Saint Laurent suits with shiny helmets and gloves. (Seriously, how do they stay so smudge-free?) And they unveiled a new look during their sweet ‘70s Cali-throwback set with white lab coats and white helmets. Extra points for switching it up.

BEYONCE IN MICHAEL COSTELLO COUTURE

Beyonce didn’t even walk the red carpet, yet there was no missing her white baroque Michael Costello gown. It was everything a Diva (with a capital D) should wear: eye-grabbing, expertly fitted, and almighty. The same could be said for her opening outfit, a sheer-caged onesie with metallic-flecked tights that will likely go down in Grammy history for its steaminess.
